Janet and I have been dancing together since 2006 when we started taking lessons with Andrew and Margaret Cowan of Cowan School of Dance and have been teaching Ballroom and Latin American dancing in Cumnock Town Hall since September 2018. We are qualified dance instructors and members of the SDTA (Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance) In the summer of 2018 we were approached by East Ayrshire Council with a view to starting an adult Ballroom and Latin dance class in Cumnock Town Hall. We readily agreed to do this and BJMDANCE was born. Shortly after starting our classes in September 2018 we were contacted by Hazel Malakoty, a PE teacher at nearby Cumnock Academy and organiser of a local dance event called Cumnock Come Dance. Hazel asked us if we would be interested in taking part in the next Cumnock Come Dance to be held in Cumnock Academy early in the new year. Happy to take up Hazel’s invitation we went along with a group of dancers from our class and took part in the 2019 Cumnock Come Dance event performing two dances the Salsa and the Cha Cha Cha. We repeated the process in 2020 this time dancing a Salsa and Ballroom Tango with our class. With our classes progressing well throughout 2019 we decided to organise our first Christmas Social Dance. This proved to be a great success and was well attended not only by our class but with other local dancing friends. We then started to plan other dances for the following Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas but unfortunately COVID made a sudden appearance and we had to make the difficult decision to temporarily close down our class from March 2020. It soon became clear to us that COVID was going to be with us for some time to come and that there would be no Social dancing. This lead us to start to look for ways of keeping in touch with our class and to try to keep them dancing. We started to put together some short videos which we filmed in our own home. These videos showed the basic steps and routines for several of the Ballroom and Latin American dances we taught. The videos were then posted on our private dance page on Facebook helping us of achieving our two main aims of keeping in touch with our class and also allowing them to practice the steps and routines in the comfort of their own homes. Moving forward to August 2021, we were given the all clear to restart classes. We started up once again in Cumnock Town Hall where we were joined by old and new faces alike. Our Christmas Social Dance was another successful evening with the proceeds of our Christmas raffle going to Irvine and Troon Cancer Care, a local Cancer charity.

About Us

After the Christmas and New Year holidays we started back in 2022 with some new faces coming along to our new beginner’s class and some of last year’s beginners moving up to our intermediate class. It was good to see our new people enjoying learning a new skill. It was also nice to see some sort of normality returning after the previous two years of COVID restrictions. Later on in the Spring we both applied for our PVG licences allowing us to teach both under 18s and Vulnerable Adults. This has allowed us to respond positively to enquiries coming in about teaching our dances to these groups of people. Also around this time we started to advertise that we’re able to provide private lessons where required. After a slightly slower start, our private lessons are now starting to move forward. Private lessons are available to anyone whether solo, couple or as a group. Contact us for more details or if you wish to discuss further. During the Spring we were approached by West Kilbride Adult Education with the possibility of starting a class in Ballroom Dancing in the West Kilbride area. West Kilbride Adult Education run various evening classes out of West Kilbride and were keen to add Ballroom and Latin dancing to their existing portfolio. After some advertising by both ourselves and West Kilbride Adult Education, we started out with an initial 11-week block course in early September. The course proved to be popular and we are now hoping to extend this in the very near future and hold a second block course of 10 weekly classes. We then turned our attention to our end of year Christmas Social dance to be held in Cumnock Town Hall. However, after making all our preparations, we were disappointed to be told the day prior to the event that East Ayrshire Leisure had no available staff to cover the dance today following evening in Cumnock Town Hall leaving us with no alternative but to cancel the event leading to a disappointing end to 2022. All in all, though it has been a successful 2022 and we are now looking forward to starting our new session in early 2023.
2022 ended with a disappointment as our planned Christmas Social Dance was cancelled at the last minute due to circumstances beyond our control. Disappointing but unavoidable. Starting back in January 2023 we looked forward to our first new beginners class of the year. We welcomed several new people to the class for the first time , most of them having never danced before. We then made the decision to put the Christmas Dance disappointment behind us and set up our very first Valentine’s dance instead. The dance was held in February in Cumnock Town Hall and proved to be a very enjoyable experience. The raffle also raised some money for one of the local charities, Irvine and Troon Cancer Care. This charity provides transport and drivers to people suffering from cancer by taking them back and forward to hospital from their own home for their appointments and/or treatment. A very worthy cause. At the same time , our other class continued at West Kilbride Adult Education Centre in West Kilbride. This class is predominantly attended by dancers recently starting out from beginners level. The class is run for adults only by West Kilbride Adult Education and is proving to be very popular. The class closes down for the Summer but we are kept busy up in Cumnock during this time. Towards the end of August we started our second beginners class of the year up in Cumnock again welcoming new class members. West Kilbride also started again in early September with a full class of dancers made up of both old faces coming back and new people starting up. All in all it has been a steady, productive and enjoyable year for us. Things have gone around in a full circle with our Christmas 2023 dance having been held once again in Cumnock Town Hall. A lovely way to end the year.
